Animated Map of Casualties in Iraq

A friend of mine showed me this link.  I'm not sure who did this but watching it was a very powerful experience for me.  I encourage everyone else to watch it as well.

I don't have anything else to say, anything I could possibly say that would add more to this.  The only appropriate response is silence.

I want to see them in jail

Sun May 21, 2006 at 10:28:08 AM PDT

I was totally miffed in my high school history class when we got to the part about Nixon being pardoned by Ford.  Sure, that's nice & friendly & all that but I wanted to see the little fucker in jail.  Because, silly me, I thought that subverting democracy was a crime.

Flash forward 20 years & you see the result of that pardon:  the same shit happening all over again only the criminals have gotten more sophisticated.  Assuming that we're able to stop this, I don't want to see a repeat of this in another 20 years.  So I say, put the fuckers in jail.

More formally, I would like all the Democratic candidates for office to affirm that they will not pardon any criminal conduct by President Bush & any members of his cabinet or of the Executive Branch of the government generally as well as any criminal conduct by ANY member of Congress or the military, regardless of party affiliation.

Word of the Day

Tue May 02, 2006 at 10:34:08 AM PDT

CLUSTERFUCK

Military term for an operation in which multiple things have gone wrong. Related to "SNAFU" (Situation Normal, All Fucked Up") and "FUBAR" (Fucked Up Beyond All Repair).

In radio communication or polite conversation (i.e. with a very senior officer with whom you have no prior experience) the term "clusterfuck" will often be replaced by the NATO phonetic acronym "Charlie Foxtrot."

Also:
Large quantity of confused people in a disorganized manner.

What's Wrong with this Picture?

Sat Apr 01, 2006 at 07:06:44 AM PDT

Five Republicans at the hearing took turns attacking the idea as a reckless stunt that could embolden terrorists. Just two Democrats showed up to defend it, arguing that Congress needed to rein in the White House's expansive view of presidential power. The Democrats' star witness was John W. Dean, the former counsel to President Richard M. Nixon who divulged many of the details in the Watergate scandal.

Wishes for Sen. Byrd

Sun Mar 26, 2006 at 07:37:08 AM PDT

MSNBC is reporting that Sen. Byrd's wife Erma Ora James Byrd died of an illness.  I just wanted to wish Sen. Byrd the best in what I'm sure is a very difficult time for him:  my thoughts & prayers are with you & your family.

one line talking points

Thu Mar 23, 2006 at 10:15:03 AM PDT

I offer these to the democratic office holders as well as the legions of "advisors" & "strategists" that make the talk show circuit.  Use them.

  1.  Torture is not an American value.
  2.  Nixon resigned under threat of impeachment for violating the law; why should this president be any different?
  3.  If George W. Bush had gone to Vietnam, he may have learned enough to not go into Iraq.
  4.  I don't see you volunteering yourself or your kids to go fight in Iraq.
  5.  If government sponsored health care sucks so badly, why do you get it?

I like the first one best ... the others are a bit long.

Add your own but be brief.  The goal here is to generate short sound bites that get airplay & that force the opposition to spend a lot of time explaining or hem-hawing & generally looking like politicians.

Bugs in the New Format

Tue Mar 14, 2006 at 10:56:22 AM PDT

First of all, kudos to the developer(s) of the new commenting system ... this is unbelieveably cool & easy to use & will set the trend on political blogs in the near future.

That said, most major software upgrades have issues for whatever reason & this one doesn't seem to be diffferent.  So far I've come across two:

  1.  When posting a comment, the blinking text cursor does not appear in the comment field.  Once you click the preview button, it does appear.  Using Firefox (1.5x) & Windows XP, default settings & no extensions.

  2.  Double posting of comments.  Haven't run into this myself but a couple of other users in comments have indicated that clicking on the post button tells you that the comment didn't post so the user clicks on it again.  But in fact, the initial comment did post & the end result is multiple comments with the same text.

Add any other bugs you come across here, preferably with system information.

the dark side of politics

Sat Mar 04, 2006 at 10:57:45 AM PDT

i used to make fun of all the clinton haters in the right wing. you know the ones: they started sputttering & spitting & getting red in the face as soon as one so much as mentioned clinton. hell, the fanatic nature of the raving right -- clinton could do no right & bush can do no wrong -- was the reason i decided to become more involved in politics.

now i notice that a lot of people that i like & respect are doing that with bush.

Clueless in Blogsville

Thu Feb 16, 2006 at 08:59:06 AM PDT

or, It's the End of Liberalism & I Feel Fine

Of course, the subtitle could just as easily be It's the End of Conservatism & I Feel Fine.  Or even Libertarianism.  Progressivism.  Populism.  Whatever.  Ideologies in general are dead & I for one don't give a flying fuck.

But you say:  No, that can't be.  I'm still a liberal.  Or a progressive.  Or a conservative.  And you might be.  Or at least consider yourself to be.  And who knows:  you might even be right about yourself.  But get over yourself because this isn't about you.  This is about the bigger divisions in our country & in the world.  And the conflicts currently raging do not fall along the left-right liberal-conservative axis.

More to the point, still thinking in these terms at this point is not only ridiculous but also impractical.  You might as well run around with a confederate flag on the back of your prius.  What the fuck is he babbling about you say?  Follow me behind the fold & I'll explain (though, fair warning, it'll take a bit & you might want to grab a cup o' joe before starting).

What's Your Economic Situation?

Thu Nov 17, 2005 at 03:44:02 PM PDT

Just lately, over say the past year or so, all the major business shows / channels, seem to be reporting that we have a really great economy. Certainly the largest businesses in the world are recording profits & are flush with money. The Federal Open Market Committee is raising short term interest rates because Greenspan thinks that the economy is in danger of heating up or getting too good.

But an informal poll of my friends says this is not the case. A lot of them are out of work or working at jobs with little or no job security or at minimum wage. Health insurance for the most part is a luxury. And the littlest of things could throw some of them on the streets.
